Earlier this week, we proudly participated in the announcement
of a new global initiative, facilitated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to treat and prevent intestinal worms (also known as soil-transmitted helminthes or STH).
As a supporter of Vitamin Angels, you know vitamin A deficiency
can have devastating consequences for young children. But did
you know that worms can make a bad problem worse?
Worms prevent children from absorbing what little vitamin A
they might have access to in their daily diets. That’s why for years we’ve
been pairing albendazole, a deworming treatment, with our vitamin A
distributions for children under five. By eliminating worms, we increase absorption of vitamin A. It’s a win-win.
And just like with vitamin A deficiency, it’s often the youngest,
most vulnerable children who are most susceptible to worms, and
especially those children who are missed by government programs.
As part of this new collaboration, we bring our expertise in reaching at-risk children in hard-to-reach places with life changing interventions.
